Carey – The Driver

Thanks to Tristan Bath from The Quietus and his ‘Spool’s Out’ column for highlighting the recent album on Atlanta-based Already Dead Tapes and Records by the mysterious Carey entitled ‘The Driver’. It’s a diverse, beautifully arranged collection spanning modern classical-tinged post rock, jazzy prog and robust minimalism among others. The opening brace are a case in point – track one is a dulcimer-powered gem comparable to Rachel’s, Manyfingers and Memory Drawings, while the following piece draws upon North African rhythms and guitar picking as well as warbling, Soft Machine-esque keyboards. The penultimate composition was also particularly notable for its ornate, enigmatic atmosphere worthy of French guitarist Mocke Depret, especially his recent work with Midget!.
